Dr. Helena Mentis

MentisAssociate Professor, Information Systems

Helena Mentis is an Associate Professor of Human Centered Computing and Health Informatics in the Department of Information Systems. Dr. Mentis examines the challenges clinical healthcare providers face in sharing and understanding ambiguous and interpretive health information – particularly with regards to bodily movement. She has most recently been studying issues of embodied collaboration and communication around health information in the operating room in both the US and the UK.  She received a PhD in Information Sciences and Technology from The Pennsylvania State University, a M.S. in Communication from Cornell, and a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining UMBC, she held positions as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School, a postdoc at Microsoft Research Cambridge, a research fellow at the University of Cambridge, and a postdoc at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science.
